The rock here doesn’t drop all at once, rather it steps down in stages toward a trench just visible at the painting’s edge, as if the seabed itself is easing its way into deeper water. A woman glides along the shelf, arms spread straight behind her, moving away from the viewer with the kind of ease that needs no visible effort. Above the drop-off, a man treads water, head breaking the surface, holding his place over the depth without quite entering it. Further back, another floats on his back, going nowhere in particular, while two women chase fish together, more interested in each other’s company than the catch. Schools of fish move loosely through it all, unbothered by any of them.
A dreamy palette of soft creamy pink rock against turquoise-green water, with touches of aqua, mustard, jaune gives the shallows a vibrancy that feels almost sunlit from below.
Esplin masterfully uses colour and expressive markings to convey the landscape, not as it is, but as it is felt. The environment is juxtaposed by the finer details of the figures, a signature of the artists’ distinctive style.
