The hour is uncertain — early enough, or late enough, that the two figures rising from the water in the corner trail shadows long and unsteady before them, still somewhere between sleep and waking. It’s the kind of light that makes the line hard to hold, especially here, where the water pools calm and sandy within its ring of sheltering rock. Further in, the sea has already claimed everyone else. Two drift through the shallows without direction. Another leans back against a submerged stone, letting the water find his chest and shoulders. One wades slow and unbothered, still waist-deep, in no rush for the shore. And higher up, a man has climbed the rocks at the centre, surveying it all from his own small, private island.
The rock is realised in umber and fawn which frames bold brushstrokes of Verdigris, jade and teal frame while the creamy sand beneath is obscured by glare, the whole scene caught in that soft, uncertain hour when a place this beautiful makes it easy to forget the time.
Esplin masterfully uses colour and expressive markings to convey the landscape, not as it is, but as it is felt. The environment is juxtaposed by the finer details of the figures, a signature of the artists’ distinctive style.
