From just below the surface a coral shelf brims with life, shallow and bright, before the seabed drops into a trench and rises again on the far side into another reef. A woman and child paddle across the shelf, heads still above water, unhurried. Below them the trench holds its own quiet chase: a couple dive down together after a passing school of fish, and further off a lone swimmer cuts through the deep with real intent, all power and purpose where the others drift. Around them all, loose schools scatter and reform, indifferent to who’s chasing whom.
 
Painted in a lighter register of aqua, cream and light steel blue, the water reads soft and sunlit, while the coral and fish flash through in pink, purple, orange and red — small sparks of colour against the calm.
 
Esplin masterfully uses colour and expressive markings to convey the landscape, not as it is, but as it is felt. The environment is juxtaposed by the finer details of the figures, a signature of the artists’ distinctive style.
