Two halves of a whole, this diptych captures a single scene of one unhurried morning by the sea.
 
On the left, the water gathers people into quiet companionship - women resting into each other’s rhythm, girls trading secrets, a couple asking nothing more of the current than to hold them. On the right, the same morning tips toward openness - a man finds height and sun on the rocks, a swimmer claims the deep water, two friends close the distance between them at their own pace.
 
Seen together, the diptych reads like one long morning, its people drifting in and out of company as the water carries them. The shared palette of verdigris and opal, lit through with aqua, ties the two canvases into a single unbroken tide.
 
Esplin masterfully uses colour and expressive markings to convey the landscape, not as it is, but as it is felt. The environment is juxtaposed by the finer details of the figures, a signature of the artists’ distinctive style.
