Down here, light arrives already broken — scattered shafts filtering between two great columns of stone that rise the full height of the painting like pillars of a drowned chamber. Coral burns bright at the rock’s base, and loose schools of fish drift and regroup through the blue. At the centre, a woman hangs suspended mid-motion, trailing bubbles, entirely at home in the water’s weight. Above her a man arches back in open exultation, arms flung wide, lost in the moment rather than reaching past it. To the side, another woman noses into a pocket of rock as if the basin still has something to show her, while a third floats motionless just beneath the light, unhurried. Elsewhere a lone swimmer moves with easy purpose along the rock’s edge, one more figure content to stay a while in this quiet, sunlit deep.

Painted in striking sapphire and turquoise, warmed by vermillion and ochre and struck through with bold panther pink, the piece turns the underwater world into a place worth lingering in, not leaving.

Esplin masterfully uses colour and expressive markings to convey the landscape, not as it is, but as it is felt. The environment is juxtaposed by the finer details of the figures, a signature of the artists’ distinctive style.
